Today's Thesis: Iran and Israel exchanged missile strikes overnight on Day 100 of the war, the Houthis warned they would target Israel-linked ships in the Red Sea, the Tel Aviv stock exchange dropped 2.4% at the open, Friday's payrolls came in at 172,000 — double the forecast — the Nasdaq crashed 4.18% for its worst day in over a year, yields jumped above 4.55%, and your gas price, your mortgage rate, your 401(k), and the price of everything that ships through the Red Sea are all moving the wrong direction at once heading into Warsh's first FOMC meeting in eight days.

Day 100 · both sides firing · oil was $92 Friday
Iran and Israel are exchanging missile strikes this morning — and your gas price is next
Iran fired two waves of ballistic missiles at Israel overnight, sending millions of Israelis into bomb shelters and shuttering schools nationwide for the first time in two months. Israel struck back, hitting military targets and a petrochemical plant near the Iranian city of Mahshahr, along with sites in Tehran, Isfahan, and Tabriz. Iran's Revolutionary Guard called it "Operation Nasr" and said it targeted two Israeli military bases. Oil closed at $92 on Friday, and this kind of escalation — active fire between both countries on Day 100 of the war — is the setup that sent crude above $100 in March and could do it again by the end of the week. Your gas price will follow within days.
The other side: Trump told Axios this morning he's "very close to a final deal with Iran" and urged Netanyahu not to retaliate further — every previous round of direct fire between these two countries has been followed by a return to talks.

Houthis target Red Sea · Tehran airport shut · fares rising
The Houthis just threatened the Red Sea — and summer flights are about to get repriced
Yemen's Houthi rebels warned overnight they would target Israel-linked ships in the Red Sea, reopening a shipping lane threat that hit global trade costs earlier this year. Tehran suspended all flights from Mehrabad airport. Israeli strikes on Beirut and Iranian sites across four cities disrupted airspace across the region. If oil spikes above $100 this week, jet fuel costs climb with it — and the summer fare relief that airlines were starting to offer on the back of the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire disappears.
The other side: The Houthis made similar threats in March and April that never fully materialized into sustained Red Sea closures, and shipping reroutes around the Cape are already in place — so the supply chain impact may be smaller than the headline suggests.

172,000 jobs — double the forecast — but the hiring underneath tells a different story
May payrolls came in at 172,000, and March and April were revised up by 93,000 combined. But the gains were concentrated: leisure and hospitality added 70,000, local government 55,000, and healthcare 35,000, while financial services lost 22,000. The share of unemployed Americans looking for more than six months hit 27.5% — the highest of this cycle — so the headline is strong but the people who lose jobs are taking longer to find new ones.
The other side: Average hourly earnings cooled to 3.4% year over year from 3.6% in April — the one line in the report that says the labor market is producing jobs without overheating on wages.

Nasdaq -4.18% · 10-yr 4.55% · Tel Aviv -2.4% today

The Nasdaq crashed 4%, yields jumped to 4.55%, and Tel Aviv is falling this morning
The Nasdaq fell 4.18% on Friday — its worst day since April 2025 — with Nvidia down 5%, Broadcom off 5.7%, and Micron losing 9.4%. The 10-year yield jumped to 4.55% and the 30-year climbed back above 5%, which means mortgage rates are heading higher just as the war restarts. The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange dropped 2.4% at Monday's open.
The other side: The Russell 2000 gained 1.45% on Friday while the Nasdaq crashed — money didn't leave the market, it rotated, and a 65% chance of a hold at the June FOMC means Warsh may not hike even with yields this high.

Day 100 of the Iran war — and Trump says he decides what happens next
Monday marks the 100th day since the US and Israel struck Iran on February 28. Trump told the Financial Times that Netanyahu "doesn't call the shots" and told Fox he wants Iran to "stop firing missiles and return to the negotiating table." Warsh's first FOMC meeting is in eight days, and Fed Governor Schmid said Friday that inflation is "the biggest risk facing the economy."
The other side: Trump also told Axios he's "very close to a final deal with Iran" — a deal or de-escalation by midweek could flip the entire mood heading into SpaceX's $1.75 trillion IPO on Friday.
