20% toll on 27% of world's oil

A New Toll on Your Gas Starts at 4pm
Trump reinstated the Iran blockade Monday and added a 20% toll on all cargo through the Strait of Hormuz. It takes effect today at 4 p.m. ET. About 27% of the world's crude oil passes through that strait, and gas is already up 8 cents this past week to $3.87 nationally. The toll hits more than fuel — it covers everything on a container ship, from car parts to electronics. If shippers pay more, you pay more at the register.

The other side: The UN maritime agency says the toll violates international law, and no collection mechanism exists yet — this may stay an announcement longer than a policy.

42% chance of hike by year-end

The Fed isn't planning one rate hike. It's planning a cycle.
Former Fed President Jim Bullard told CNBC the Fed doesn't do one-off rate moves — “usually it means a tightening cycle.” Bank of America agrees and now forecasts three quarter-point hikes before year-end, which would push the federal funds rate past 4.25%. This morning's CPI may print soft at 3.9%, but the ceasefire that drove June's gas prices down is gone — and the Hormuz toll just landed on top. If you've been waiting for mortgage rates to drop, the calendar just moved against you.
The other side: A soft core CPI near 2.9% could still stall the cycle before it starts — the Fed watches shelter and services costs more than oil swings.

Monday wiped a week of gains from your 401(k)
Stocks sold off Monday after Trump announced the Hormuz blockade and 20% toll, sending oil up 5% to its highest level in a month. The S&P 500 dropped 0.8% to 7,515, the Nasdaq fell 1.6%, and SK Hynix cratered 9.3% in its second day of trading. Five major banks — JPMorgan, Goldman, BofA, Wells, and Citi — report results before the bell this morning, and what they say about consumer stress sets the week's tone. If your retirement sits in an index fund, Monday erased about a week of gains.
The other side: Energy stocks cushioned the Dow, and oil-driven selloffs have reversed quickly every time this year once headlines cooled.
